These are a chain of famous volcanoes in Colombia, and they are located in the Colombian Andes Mountains. The highest and most famous volcano of this chain is Nevado Del Huila, which is specifically located in The Cordillera Central of the mountains (South-Central Colombia). Additionally, it stands 50 miles away from the Colombian city, Cali. This active volcano’s highest peak reaches 18,865 feet (5,750 meters). Nevado Del Huila last erupted in 2008, unfortunately killing 10 people, and destroying many others’ homes. Another mountain of this chain is the Nevado Del Ruiz, which is also located in The Cordillera Central. Mount Ruiz is 80 miles west of Bogotá and one of the northernmost active volcanoes in The Cordillera Central. Nevado Del Ruiz is not quite as tall as Nevado Del Huila, as its highest point is 17,717 feet (5,400 meters). Its eruptions are infrequent and there hasn’t been one of late, but there was a very important one in 1985. This eruption created many mudslides and spread ash and water over town after town, killing over 25,000 people. This was one of the biggest volcanic eruption devastations in Colombia. Although these volcanoes have a difficult ecosystem to live in, many plants and animals actually thrive here. Animals such as the spectacled bear, the puma, the deer rabbit, and the golden eagle. And plants like mosses and rosemary. The snow capped volcanoes of Colombia are very important in Colombian history because of the devastations they have caused.
